The competition was fiercer than ever this year when the Kanthal Award winner of 2018 was to be presented. In the race: three companies from three continents, all with very different historical and cultural backgrounds – but with one common denominator: the will to make the world a better place to live in.
The jury choose Bharat Energy Storage Technology (BEST) from India because of their innovative energy storage and power generation technology, based on heated silicon and Stirling motors, making it possible to utilize the full potential of renewable but intermittent energy sources like wind and solar power.
– We couldn’t be any happier and prouder, says Mr. Prakash Bhaskharabhitla, Managing Director of BEST the day after the award ceremony. This is proof of that what we are doing is not only interesting for tech people, but also in a much broader perspective. The award will push us even more to keep developing energy storage solutions for the future, Mr. Bhaskharabhitla concludes.
– The nominees this year were truly fantastic, continues Nicklas Nilsson, President of Kanthal and founder of the Kanthal Award. They are driven by the belief in innovation as absolute crucial, not only for their own growth, but also for society as a whole. When we talk with these companies, or rather the individuals in these companies, we all feel excitement and joy that there actually are sustainability forces to be reckoned with.
Besides the honor, Bharat Energy Storage Technology is awarded EUR 5000 to be donated to a charity of their choice. This year the prize money goes to Pushpagiri Vitreo Retina Institute (PVRI) for their work with screening for Retinopathy in premature babies.
New for this year is that the two runner-ups also gets an award of EUR 1000 each to donate.
Alabama Power(USA) was nominated for driving conversion from gas to electric heating solutions in foundries for industrial customers, in order to improve energy efficiency, safety and quality. They will donate their prize money to Field of Angels, a league of baseball for physically and intellectually disabled children.
Cortus(SWE), nominated for their unique and effective WoodRoll® technology which produces a clean renewable high energy gas which can be used in multiple applications, made their donation to the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation and IPCC.
Huge congratulations to the winner, BEST, as well as the runner-ups. We are looking forward to following your journeys into the future of your respective fields!
